Top 10 Alt Comedians You Need to Know in 2026

Ten comedians doing the most interesting work in alternative comedy right now, ranked, with the reason for each pick and the best place to start.

The most interesting comedy of 2026 is not where you might look for it. It is in an HBO show about a collapsing office chair, a Broadway farce about Mary Todd Lincoln, a Peabody-winning surrealist's one-man show, and a self-released YouTube special from comedy's most anxious screamer. These are the ten alternative comedians we think matter most right now, ranked, with the reason for each pick and where to start.

How we picked

Every comedian here released significant work in 2025 or 2026, so this is a list about now, not careers. We weighted originality of form above popularity, and we only included people whose work you can actually find. If you want the all-time canon, see our alt comedy all-stars; if you want people earlier in their careers, see our emerging comedians of 2026. And yes, this list replaces our 2024 picks, which we have revisited separately.

The top ten

  1. Tim Robinson The Chair Company · HBO

Why he's here: The Chair Company, which Robinson co-created and stars in, premiered on HBO in October 2025 and was renewed for a second season the following month. It takes the energy of I Think You Should Leave (a man who cannot let a small humiliation go) and stretches it into a serialised paranoid thriller: an office chair collapses under him, and he becomes convinced there is a conspiracy behind it. Add the 2025 A24 film Friendship, in which he plays a lonely suburban dad who latches onto a new neighbour, and Robinson had the strongest run in American comedy.

Start with: The Chair Company, episode one, then Friendship.

  2. Nathan Fielder The Rehearsal · HBO

Why he's here: The second season of The Rehearsal (2025) took on aviation safety and the way co-pilots fail to speak up, and somehow ended with Fielder at the controls of a passenger jet. It is the most ambitious thing anyone in comedy has made in years, and it blurs comedy, documentary and social experiment until the categories stop meaning anything.

Start with: season two of The Rehearsal. If you're new to him, Nathan for You first.

  3. Julio Torres Fantasmas · Color Theories

Why he's here: Torres's HBO series Fantasmas (2024), a dreamlike sketch odyssey about a lost oyster earring, won a Peabody in 2025. He followed it with Color Theories, a solo stage show built around colours, which ran off-Broadway in 2025 and aired as an HBO special in March 2026. No one else makes comedy that looks like his: handmade, design-obsessed, gentle and very strange.

Start with: Color Theories on HBO, then Fantasmas.

  4. Cole Escola Oh, Mary! · Broadway & West End

Why they're here: Oh, Mary!, Escola's farce reimagining Mary Todd Lincoln as a frustrated cabaret star, moved from off-Broadway to Broadway in 2024, won Escola the 2025 Tony for best leading actor in a play, and won the Olivier for best entertainment or comedy play in 2026 after transferring to London. It is a triumph of alt-comedy sensibility (camp, chaos and character work honed in downtown clubs and online videos) on the biggest stages in theatre. The role has since been taken over by other comedians, including Megan Stalter and Bowen Yang.

Start with: Oh, Mary! if you can get a ticket; otherwise, Escola's older character videos online.

  5. Kate Berlant Parmesan · HBO

Why she's here: Berlant does comedy about performing, the vanity and desperation of wanting to be watched. Her solo show KATE, directed by Bo Burnham, played Los Angeles and London, and her HBO stand-up special Parmesan is scheduled to premiere on October 16, 2026. She also co-hosts the podcast Poog with Jacqueline Novak.

    Start with: Parmesan, then Poog.

  6. Megan Stalter Too Much · Hacks · Oh, Mary!

Why she's here: Stalter went from deliberately awful Instagram characters to a lead role in Lena Dunham's Netflix series Too Much (2025), while continuing as Kayla on Hacks. In July 2026 she began a run as Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! on Broadway. Her comic persona, a confident woman with no reason to be confident, now works at every scale. Our full biography has more.

Start with: Too Much, then her early character videos.

  7. Mae Martin Wayward · Netflix

Why they're here: After Feel Good and the stand-up special SAP, Martin created and starred in Wayward (Netflix, 2025), a dark limited series set around a school for troubled teenagers, and released a debut album, I'm a TV, in 2025. Martin is the clearest example of a stand-up whose voice translates into drama without losing its humour.

Start with: Feel Good for the comedy, Wayward for the range.

  8. Josh Johnson The Daily Show · stand-up

Why he's here: Johnson joined The Daily Show's rotating host lineup in 2025, and his stand-up has become a model for how comedians can work in the 2020s: a steady stream of new material posted online, alongside traditional specials, the latest of which is an HBO hour in 2026. He's a calm, analytical comic who takes an idea apart in front of you and then puts it back together funnier.

Start with: his stand-up on YouTube, then Up Here Killing Myself (2023).

  9. Conner O'Malley Stand Up Solutions · Rap World

Why he's here: O'Malley makes the loudest, most anxious comedy around: characters screaming about tech, wellness and hustle culture. In 2024 he released the self-produced special Stand Up Solutions on YouTube and the indie film Rap World, which he co-directed and starred in; in 2025 he appeared in Friendship and The Chair Company. He is the most direct heir to the Tim and Eric tradition.

    Start with: Stand Up Solutions.

  10. Atsuko Okatsuka Father · Hulu

Why she's here: Okatsuka's second special, Father (Hulu, 2025), builds on The Intruder with a more personal hour that leans into family. She also had a voice role in Pixar's Elio (2025). Her comedy is playful and physical, but there is real sadness under it, and few comics are better at switching between the two.

    Start with: Father.

Honourable mentions

  • Catherine Cohen: a 2024 album, Overdressed, and an off-Broadway musical, Broad Strokes, which opened in July 2026.
  • John Early: directed his first feature, Maddie's Secret, which premiered at TIFF in 2025.
  • Jerrod Carmichael: still pushing confessional comedy as far as it goes, from Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show (HBO, 2024) onward.
  • Bowen Yang: left SNL in December 2025 and took on Oh, Mary! on Broadway in 2026.
  • Sarah Sherman: her HBO special Sarah Squirm: Live + In the Flesh (2025) is the grossest, most joyous hour of recent years.
  • Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees (2024) is still the best stand-up special of the decade so far.

Who dropped off since spring

An earlier version of this page, published in April 2026, also included Ziwe, Jamie Loftus, Rory Scovel, Kyle Kinane and Jacqueline Novak. All five remain worth your time. We moved them because this list is about work released in 2025 and 2026, and the comedians above had the bigger new projects. Rory Scovel's 2026 Netflix special and Novak's podcast with Kate Berlant kept them close; Kinane wound down his podcasts in early 2026. Lists like this are snapshots, and we'll revise it again as the year's specials land.

What this list says about 2026

Three patterns stand out. First, alt comedy has moved into longer forms: serialised TV, films, theatre. Robinson, Fielder, Torres and Escola all make work that would once have been a sketch and is now a season or a play. Second, the stand-up special is splitting in two: prestige HBO hours on one side, self-released YouTube specials on the other, with Johnson and O'Malley showing the second route is a real career. Third, the alt-comedy pipeline now runs straight into the mainstream. Oh, Mary! began as a downtown cabaret sensibility and ended with a Tony.
