The 50 Greatest Alt Comedy Specials of All Time, Ranked

From Richard Pryor in Long Beach to Jacqueline Novak off-Broadway: the stand-up hours and albums that changed what a comedy special could be.

The greatest alternative comedy specials are the ones that changed what a stand-up hour could be: Richard Pryor turning autobiography into a concert film, Tig Notaro walking on stage four days after a cancer diagnosis, Hannah Gadsby dismantling the joke in Nanette, Bo Burnham making Inside alone in one room. Here are 50 of them, ranked.

Our definition is broad on purpose. "Special" includes concert films, TV and streaming hours, self-released recordings and a handful of landmark albums, because for many alt comedians the record was the special. "Alternative" means work that came out of, or reshaped, the scene outside the mainstream club circuit (our explainer on what alt comedy is covers the history). A few mainstream giants are here because the alt generation was answering them. We ranked on three things: how much a special changed the form, how well it holds up today, and whether it is the best document of a great comedian's voice.

For new releases, see our separate guide to the best comedy specials of 2025–2026.

The top ten

  1. Richard Pryor: Live in Concert 1979 · Concert film

Filmed at the Terrace Theater in Long Beach, this is the first great stand-up concert film and the blueprint for every personal hour since. Pryor plays his father, his grandmother, his dogs and his own heart attack, and finds comedy in vulnerability without ever asking for sympathy. Not alt by label, but nothing on this list exists without it.

  2. Hannah Gadsby: Nanette 2018 · Netflix

Filmed at the Sydney Opera House, Nanette starts as a sharp stand-up hour and then turns on the form itself, arguing that the setup-punchline structure had forced Gadsby to make trauma into a joke. It started a debate about what stand-up is for that still hasn't ended. Our full guide to Nanette explains why.

  3. Bo Burnham: Inside 2021 · Netflix

Written, shot, edited and performed alone in a single room during the pandemic, Inside is part special, part musical, part diary of a breakdown. It won Emmys for writing, directing and music, and it is the most formally ambitious special of the streaming era. See our Bo Burnham profile.

  4. Tig Notaro: Live 2012 · Audio recording

Recorded at Largo in Los Angeles days after Notaro learned she had cancer, following a run of personal losses, and opening with that news. Released as an inexpensive download through Louis C.K.'s website, it was nominated for a Grammy and became one of the most talked-about sets in stand-up history. Read our Tig Notaro profile.

  5. Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel 2022 · HBO

Directed by Bo Burnham in a small New York jazz club, Rothaniel is a coming-out hour that refuses to resolve neatly. Carmichael talks directly to the audience, lets silences sit and builds the hour around family secrets. It won the Emmy for writing. See our Jerrod Carmichael profile.

  6. Maria Bamford: The Special Special Special! 2012 · Self-released

Bamford performs a full hour in her living room for an audience of two: her parents. The setting turns her already uncomfortable material about mental health into something tender and very strange. A proof that a special's production rules were optional all along. See our Maria Bamford profile.

  7. A Steven Wright Special 1985 · HBO

The definitive document of the deadpan one-liner, with Wright's flat, sleepy voice delivering surreal thoughts that land like small koans. Every comedian who builds an act from tiny, strange observations works in his shadow.

  8. David Cross: Shut Up You Fucking Baby! 2002 · Sub Pop, double album

A post-9/11 political album released by a rock label, recorded across several shows. Cross's anger at Bush-era America, religion and the music industry made it the model for a generation of politically sharp alt comics. Read our David Cross profile.

  9. Andy Kaufman at Carnegie Hall 1979 · Live show

Kaufman's 1979 show included his Mighty Mouse lip-sync, an elderly woman who "died" on stage, the Rockettes and, famously, buses to take the audience for milk and cookies afterwards. It is anti-comedy as a full evening of theatre. See our Andy Kaufman profile.

  10. Stewart Lee: 41st Best Stand-Up Ever! 2008 · DVD

Named after his position on a Channel 4 ranking of stand-ups, this is Lee at his most rigorous: repetition, long silences and jokes about how jokes work. The best introduction to British alt stand-up's most analytical voice. See our Stewart Lee guide.

11 to 25: the canon

  1. Bill Hicks: Revelations 1993 · Channel 4

Filmed at the Dominion Theatre in London, not long before Hicks died of cancer in 1994, aged 32. His searching, furious act on religion, drugs and media was a direct influence on the Sub Pop generation of American alt comics.

  2. Patton Oswalt: Werewolves and Lollipops 2007 · Sub Pop

The peak of Oswalt's long, nerdy, reference-heavy riffs, released on a rock label. It shows why he became the alt scene's most articulate stand-up of the 2000s. See our Patton Oswalt guide.

  3. Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill 1999 · HBO

Filmed in San Francisco, it introduced many Americans to Izzard's rambling, historical, stream-of-consciousness style. A huge influence on comedians who wanted to make every tangent part of the act.

  4. Mitch Hedberg: Mitch All Together 2003 · Comedy Central Records

Hedberg's one-liners, delivered from behind sunglasses and long hair, were surreal and perfectly crafted. This album and DVD are the best record of a voice lost in 2005, when he died at 37.

  5. Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees 2024 · Netflix

An off-Broadway solo show, directed on stage by John Early, about one subject for roughly an hour and a half. Novak's language is so precise and her structure so ambitious that it may be the best argument for the theatrical stand-up show. See our Jacqueline Novak profile.

  6. Maria Bamford: Old Baby 2017 · Netflix

Bamford performs her hour in a series of growing venues, starting in front of a mirror and ending in a real theatre, with tiny audiences in between. A clever continuation of The Special Special Special!

  7. Gary Gulman: The Great Depresh 2019 · HBO

Gulman weaves documentary footage of his recovery from severe depression into a stand-up hour. Warm, funny and an unusually honest picture of mental illness (see our page on comedy and mental health).

  8. Chris Rock: Bring the Pain 1996 · HBO

The special that made Rock a stand-up superstar, with a ferocity and structure that set the standard for the HBO hour. Mainstream, but a huge influence on how alt comics wrote political material.

  9. George Carlin: Jammin' in New York 1992 · HBO

Late-period Carlin at his angriest and most controlled, filmed at Madison Square Garden's theatre. The model for the social critic as stand-up.

  10. Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic 2005 · Concert film

Directed by Liam Lynch and mixing stand-up with songs, it is the high point of Silverman's sweetly oblivious persona. Some of its jokes about race were controversial then and are now. See our Sarah Silverman profile.

  11. Steve Martin: Let's Get Small 1977 · Album

Martin's arrow-through-the-head era was a parody of showbiz itself, and this Grammy-winning album captures it. The original anti-comedy superstar, and a big influence on the 1990s alt generation.

  12. Bo Burnham: Make Happy 2016 · Netflix

Burnham's last tour special before Inside, with a closing song about performance and anxiety that points straight at what came next.

  13. John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City 2018 · Netflix

Mulaney's polished storytelling at its peak, with long, perfectly timed set pieces. It won the Emmy for writing. See our John Mulaney guide.

  14. Julio Torres: My Favorite Shapes 2019 · HBO

Torres sits beside a conveyor belt of small objects and tells their stories. Gentle, strange and unlike any stand-up special before it. See our Julio Torres profile.

  15. John Early: Now More Than Ever 2023 · HBO

Early's mix of stand-up, cabaret and songs, performed with a live band. A clear argument that musical comedy can be a serious art form. See our John Early profile.

26 to 40

  1. Neal Brennan: 3 Mics 2017 · Netflix

Three microphones: one for one-liners, one for stand-up and one for emotional material about depression and his father. A clever structure that anticipated the confessional specials of the next decade.

  2. Jerrod Carmichael: 8 2017 · HBO

The first Carmichael hour directed by Bo Burnham, with long pauses and a quiet, provocative style. The groundwork for Rothaniel.

  3. Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted 2015 · HBO

Remembered for the moment Notaro removes her shirt to show her mastectomy scars and keeps doing jokes. The whole hour is just as carefully controlled.

  4. Demetri Martin: Person 2007 · Comedy Central

One-liners, drawings on an easel and musical bits on guitar and harmonica. An early example of stand-up as a multimedia, conceptual act. See our Demetri Martin guide.

  5. Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion 2006 · Stand-up film

The pre-Hangover Galifianakis at his strangest, playing piano and delivering anti-jokes to a small San Francisco crowd. See our Zach Galifianakis guide.

  6. Margaret Cho: I'm the One That I Want 2000 · Concert film

Cho's story of her failed sitcom and its aftermath, adapted from her one-woman show. Pioneering, very personal stand-up about race, sexuality and Hollywood.

  7. James Acaster: Repertoire 2018 · Netflix, four specials

Four linked hours, released together, with callbacks and stories that span the whole set. An unusually ambitious move for a streaming special. See our James Acaster guide.

  8. Patton Oswalt: Annihilation 2017 · Netflix

Oswalt's first hour after the sudden death of his wife, the writer Michelle McNamara. It handles grief with remarkable honesty and still finds the jokes.

  9. Mike Birbiglia: Thank God for Jokes 2017 · Netflix

A storytelling hour about the power and risk of jokes themselves. Birbiglia's theatrical approach makes him a bridge between stand-up and solo theatre.

  10. Alex Edelman: Just for Us 2024 · HBO

Edelman's solo show about attending a white nationalist meeting in Queens, developed through Edinburgh and taken to Broadway. Tight, smart storytelling with a serious core.

  11. Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark 2023 · HBO

Maron's hour about grief after the death of his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, in 2020. His most personal and best-structured special. See our Marc Maron profile.

  12. Mae Martin: SAP 2023 · Netflix

Proof that tightly written, conventional stand-up can be just as personal and surprising as experimental work. See our Mae Martin profile.

  13. Atsuko Okatsuka: The Intruder 2022 · HBO

Okatsuka's first HBO hour, mixing family stories, physical comedy and a uniquely playful presence. See our Atsuko Okatsuka profile.

  14. Ali Wong: Baby Cobra 2016 · Netflix

Filmed when Wong was seven months pregnant, it took on motherhood, marriage and sex with a candour that changed the mainstream special.

  15. Hannah Gadsby: Douglas 2020 · Netflix

The follow-up to Nanette, named after Gadsby's dog, about their autism diagnosis and full of art-history lectures. Proof that Gadsby could be furious and very funny at once. See our Hannah Gadsby profile.

41 to 50

  1. Kyle Kinane: Whiskey Icarus 2012 · Comedy Central

Long, gravel-voiced stories about small disasters. Kinane is the alt scene's great teller of shaggy-dog stories.

  2. Eric Andre: Legalize Everything 2020 · Netflix

The chaos of The Eric Andre Show poured into a stand-up special, complete with filmed stunts and sharp political material.

  3. Ramy Youssef: More Feelings 2024 · HBO

A loose, conversational hour about faith, family and politics. Youssef is a model of how to be relaxed on stage and still serious.

  4. Hannibal Buress: Animal Furnace 2012 · Comedy Central

Buress's laid-back, absurd delivery at its best: tiny grievances inflated into long, deadpan riffs. See our Hannibal Buress profile.

  5. Hari Kondabolu: Warn Your Relatives 2018 · Netflix

Sharp, political stand-up about race, immigration and representation from one of the scene's smartest joke writers.

  6. Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up for the First Time 2017 · Netflix

Scovel's loose, partly improvised and thrillingly unpredictable hour, built on his relationship with the crowd.

  7. Kumail Nanjiani: Beta Male 2013 · Comedy Central

Nerdy, precise stand-up about growing up in Pakistan, video games and fear. A great snapshot of the 2000s alt scene in LA.

  8. Sheng Wang: Sweet & Juicy 2022 · Netflix

Directed by Ali Wong, a gentle, beautifully observed hour about small pleasures. Proof that quiet stand-up can be riveting.

  9. Catherine Cohen: The Twist…? She's Gorgeous 2022 · Netflix

Filmed at Joe's Pub, Cohen's mix of cabaret, songs and self-obsessed stand-up is a high point of the New York alt-cabaret scene. See our Catherine Cohen guide.

  10. Bo Burnham: what. 2013 · YouTube and Netflix

Burnham released this hour free on YouTube as well as on Netflix. A smart, theatrical mix of songs and jokes, and a step toward Inside.

What we left out, and why

Every list like this is an argument. A few notes on the choices.

  • Mainstream giants. Pryor, Carlin and Chris Rock are here because the alt generation was clearly responding to them. Eddie Murphy's Delirious and Jerry Seinfeld's work are great, but their influence on alt comedy is less direct.
  • Louis C.K. His 2011 self-released Live at the Beacon Theater changed how specials were distributed, and he helped release Tig Notaro's Live. In 2017 he admitted to sexual misconduct reported by several women. We note the distribution history and have not ranked his specials.
  • Recent releases. Specials take a few years to settle into a canon. We've kept 2025–2026 releases on a separate best of 2025–2026 list.
  • English-language only. Great stand-up traditions in other languages deserve their own list. See our page on international comedy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative comedy special of all time?

Our pick is Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (1979), which is not 'alt' by label but set the terms for every confessional, personal stand-up hour since. Among specials that came out of the alternative scene itself, Hannah Gadsby's Nanette and Bo Burnham's Inside are the strongest contenders.

What makes a comedy special 'alternative'?

Usually some combination of form and attitude: a performer who breaks the setup-punchline routine, plays with the format of the special itself, or comes out of the independent venues rather than the club circuit. We use the term broadly and include a few mainstream specials that shaped the alt scene.

Where can I watch these comedy specials?

Most of the recent ones are on Netflix or HBO Max; older ones turn up on streaming services, YouTube and as albums on Spotify and Apple Music. Availability changes often, so search the title on a streaming guide like JustWatch for your country.

Is Nanette stand-up comedy?

Yes, though it is also an argument against some of stand-up's habits. Hannah Gadsby performs it as a stand-up hour, then turns on the form halfway through. Our Nanette guide covers the debate in detail.

What are the best new comedy specials?
