Family Comedy: The Best Clean, All-Ages Comedy That Doesn't Talk Down to Anyone

Clean comedy has a reputation for being safe and dull. The best of it is neither. A guide to stand-up, TV and films the whole family can watch, many of them made by alt comedians.

Family comedy has a reputation problem. "Clean" and "all-ages" sound like warning labels for something safe and toothless. But some of the most precise, inventive comedy of the last fifty years can be watched by a seven-year-old and their grandparents at the same time. This guide picks out the best of it, from clean stand-ups who other comedians worship to children's TV made by alternative comedians, and explains what makes all-ages comedy work.

What "family comedy" actually means

Three terms get mixed up:

  • Clean comedy avoids swearing and sexual content. It is aimed at adults but safe for most ages, though the subject matter (marriage, mortgages, getting old) may bore children.
  • Children's comedy is made mainly for kids.
  • Family comedy, the hard one, is made to work for children and adults at the same time.

The best family comedy usually works in layers. Physical comedy, silliness and repetition hit children. Character, timing and wordplay hit adults. And crucially, nothing depends on the adults being bored or the children being patronised.

Clean stand-up comedians worth watching

Working clean is a choice and a constraint. Without shock or profanity, everything rests on observation, act-outs and timing. That is why clean stand-ups are often admired by comedians as craftspeople.

  1. Brian Regan Stand-up

The comedian's clean comedian. Regan's act is built on physical act-outs and a persona of cheerful bafflement, and he has spent decades touring theatres. His Netflix special Nunchucks and Flamethrowers (2017) is a good place to start; his routines about school spelling bees and doctors' visits work for most ages.

  2. Nate Bargatze Stand-up

Bargatze's slow, deadpan Tennessee delivery made him one of the biggest stand-ups of the 2020s. Specials such as The Tennessee Kid (2019), The Greatest Average American (2021) and Hello World (2023) are clean without feeling cleaned up. He hosted Saturday Night Live in 2023.

  3. Jim Gaffigan Stand-up

Best known for long riffs about food, laziness and having five children. Gaffigan's whispered "inner voice" asides, in which he plays the audience judging him, are a clever structural device. He has occasionally worked bluer, so check individual specials.

  4. Henry Cho Stand-up

A Korean-American comedian from Tennessee who has worked clean for decades, often playing on the gap between how he looks and how he sounds.

Family TV that adults love

Bluey (2018-)

The Australian cartoon about a family of blue heelers, created by Joe Brumm, is one of the great comedies of its era for any age. Each seven-minute episode is about a game of make-believe, and most are secretly about parenting. Adults often find themselves the real audience.

The Muppet Show (1976-1981)

Jim Henson's variety show had celebrity guests, backstage chaos and a strong streak of absurdism. The 2011 film The Muppets, co-written by Jason Segel, featured songs by Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords, who won an Oscar for "Man or Muppet".

Pee-wee's Playhouse (1986-1990)

Paul Reubens developed Pee-wee Herman at the Groundlings in Los Angeles as a character for adult audiences before turning him into a Saturday morning children's show. The Playhouse is a gloriously weird, design-heavy world, and arguably the most alt-comedy thing ever broadcast to children.

Horrible Histories (CBBC, 2009-)

The sketch-comedy adaptation of Terry Deary's books turned British history into songs and parodies. The original adult cast later created Yonderland and the hit sitcom Ghosts. Many adults rate it alongside grown-up sketch shows; see our list of the greatest sketch shows for the wider form.

Mr. Bean (1990-1995)

Rowan Atkinson's near-silent character works anywhere in the world for any age, because it is built entirely on physical comedy and escalation.

Bob's Burgers (2011-)

Better for teenagers than small children, but a rare animated sitcom with real warmth. The voice cast is full of alt-comedy names, including H. Jon Benjamin, Kristen Schaal and Eugene Mirman.

Taskmaster (2015-)

Greg Davies and Alex Horne's British game show, in which comedians attempt absurd tasks, has become a family favourite. It contains some swearing, so it suits older children best.

Family films with real comic craft

  • Wallace & Gromit (Aardman, from 1989). Nick Park's plasticine inventor and his silent, long-suffering dog. The Wrong Trousers (1993) is close to a perfect short comedy.
  • Paddington and Paddington 2 (2014, 2017). Paul King's films are full of visual gags and precisely timed set-pieces; Hugh Grant's villain in the sequel is a career highlight.
  • WALL-E (2008). A largely wordless first act that owes a lot to silent comedy, and an environmental satire for kids (more on our comedy and the environment page).
  • Silent comedy. Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd work brilliantly with children, who often have no idea they are watching something a century old.

Musical comedy for all ages

Musical comedy is especially good for families because the music carries younger children through the jokes they don't get. Tim Minchin wrote the music and lyrics for Matilda the Musical, which began at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010 and was filmed in 2022. Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie brought the same dry wit to The Muppets. And Sesame Street has spent decades inviting comedians to perform with its puppets.

Taking kids to live comedy

Watching comedy on a screen is one thing; a live room is another, and a good one can turn a child into a lifelong comedy fan. A few practical points:

  • Look for daytime shows. Many festivals, the Edinburgh Fringe above all, run a separate children's and family programme in the mornings and afternoons, with comedians performing material written for that audience rather than a cleaned-up adult set.
  • Read the age guidance. Listings usually give a recommended minimum age. "12+" on a stand-up show often means swearing and adult themes rather than anything extreme, but it is a real signal.
  • Clean headliners on tour. Theatre tours by clean stand-ups are a good first evening show for older children, since the material is built for broad audiences and the venues are comfortable.
  • Interactive formats. Improv and sketch shows that take suggestions from the audience are ideal for children, who love seeing their own ideas turned into scenes. Our page on improv comedy explains how the form works.
  • Sit near the aisle. Short attention spans and toilet trips are part of the deal, and comedians at family shows expect it.

One warning: a comedy club's regular late show is not family comedy, even if the line-up includes a clean comic. The other acts, the drinking and the late finish make it a different experience entirely.

Why alt comedians make great family comedy

It is no accident that so many names above come out of alternative comedy. Alt comedy prizes invention over shock: absurd premises, strong characters, commitment to a strange world. Those are exactly the qualities that work for children, who have little patience for observational material about tax returns but will follow a talking dog into a rocket. Pee-wee Herman came from improv; the Muppets' humour was always absurdist; Bob's Burgers came from the same scene as Dr. Katz and Home Movies. See our page on absurdist comedy for the family resemblance.

What makes all-ages comedy work

If you are writing or performing comedy for family audiences, these principles come up again and again:

  1. Don't talk down. Children notice condescension instantly. Bluey treats children's games with complete seriousness, which is why it's funny.
  2. Layer, don't split. The weakest family films alternate kids' jokes with knowing adult winks. The best ones find jokes that work at two levels at once.
  3. Use the body. Physical comedy crosses ages and languages. Mr. Bean and Buster Keaton prove it.
  4. Commit to the world. A consistent absurd world (a playhouse with a talking chair, a bear in London) gives children rules to enjoy.
  5. Allow warmth. Family comedy can be sentimental in a way adult comedy usually avoids. The trick is earning it with jokes first.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the best clean stand-up comedians?

Brian Regan, Nate Bargatze, Jim Gaffigan and Henry Cho are the best-known stand-ups who work clean or nearly clean. Bargatze and Regan in particular are widely admired by other comedians, not just by family audiences.

What comedy can adults and kids watch together?

Bluey, the Paddington films, Wallace & Gromit, The Muppet Show, Mr. Bean, Pee-wee's Playhouse and Horrible Histories all work for children and adults at the same time. Taskmaster is a favourite with older kids, though it contains some swearing.

Is clean comedy the same as family comedy?

Not quite. Clean comedy avoids swearing and sexual content but can still deal with adult subjects like marriage and money. Family comedy is designed to work for children and adults together, usually with jokes pitched at both.

What makes family comedy funny for adults?

Good family comedy is built in layers: physical comedy and silliness for children, character and wordplay for adults, and no jokes that only work by talking down to kids. Bluey, Paddington and Wallace & Gromit are often cited as models.
