Our Mission

Founded in 2025, AltComedy.com aims to be the definitive online resource for alternative comedy. We believe that alt comedy represents not just a style of humor, but a cultural movement that continually redefines the boundaries of comedy.

Our platform exists to document, celebrate, and analyze the alt comedy scene while connecting performers, fans, and scholars who share a passion for comedy that challenges conventional approaches.

What is Alt Comedy?

Alternative comedy (or alt comedy) emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a reaction against the mainstream comedy circuit of the time. Where traditional comedy often relied on established formulas and sometimes problematic stereotypes, alt comedy embraced experimentation, political awareness, and intellectual approaches to humor.

Today, the term encompasses a wide range of performance styles, including but not limited to:

  • Anti-comedy and meta-humor
  • Surrealist and absurdist approaches
  • Character-based comedy
  • Multimedia performances
  • Political and social commentary
  • Storytelling and narrative-driven sets

What unites these diverse forms is a willingness to experiment, push boundaries, and frequently, challenge audiences to think while they laugh.

Our Team

AltComedy.com is run by a collective of comedy journalists, performers, and enthusiasts who believe in the power of alternative comedy to transform both entertainment and society.
